Technology giant ABB has received an £18million contract to provide automation and safety systems for Statoil’s Johan Castberg development.

Johan Castberg in the Barents Sea is the largest new oil project in the world, with estimated recoverable reserves of as much as 600million barrels of oil.

ABB will provide safety systems, including simualation, which will improve reliability and cost of the floating, production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel.

Deliveries from ABB will start later this year, with the company working closely with design contractor Aker Solutions on the project.

The field will commence operation in 2022, with an estimated lifespan of 30 years.

Per Erik Holsten, managing director of ABB, oil, gas and chemicals, said: “Digitalization and advanced safety and automation systems are key to safer, more efficient, more reliable and more environmentally friendly operation of oil, gas, and chemical facilities.

“Combined with our vast experience in advanced process control, and subsea and power systems, project execution is streamlined, costs are reduced, and long-term operations are safer and more efficient.”
