Greenpeace’s Arctic Sunrise vessel gas been seized and 35 protesters arrested as the environmental group continue to campaign against Arctic drilling.
The activists from the Arctic Sunrise entered the exclusion zone of Statoil’s Korpfjell well in the Barents Sea on inflatable boats and kayaks and attached a giant globe to the rig Songa Enabler.
The prospect is Norway’s most northern oil drilling site to date.
The globe carried written statements from people from all over the world, with a message to the Norwegian government to stop the oil drilling.
The activists halted the operation of the rig, and after several hours of demanding an end to the drilling in the Arctic, the Norwegian Coast Guard intervened with the protest, arresting the Arctic Sunrise ship, the activists and crew members.
Greenpeace is preparing for a legal battle later this year in a bid to end the drilling.
