Scottish firm Cairn Energy is set to start drilling work on a North Sea prospect next month.

It was confirmed yesterday that drilling operations will be undertaken by Nautical Petroleum, a subsidiary of Cairn Energy at the Chimera North Sea prospect.

Chimera is located east of Shetland, near the Ninian field.

Work will start on August 1 2019.

The Stena Don semi-submersible  rig will be used for 35 days, while the M/V Stril Explorer vessel will do preparatory seabed survey work for a ten days the site.

Last year, Cairn Energy agreed to farm out a 40% non-operated interest in licence P2312, which contains the Chimera prospect.

The company originally owned 100% of Chimera before selling a 40% stake to Canadian firm Suncor Energy.

The Chimera prospect is though to hold up to 154 million barrels of oil equivalent.

This month, Cairn Energy was met with disappointment in Norway as an exploration well has come up dry.

The Lynghaug well, around four miles from Equinor’s Norne field, found no trace of oil when it was drilled by the Transocean Arctic rig.

Despite 50 metres of sandstone being deemed to contain “very good reservoir quality”, there were no traces of oil in the well.

It has being plugged and abandoned.
