I have been supporting the campaign against ship-to-ship oil transfers in the Moray Firth for the last year.
If the proposals are given the go-ahead, the potential consequences for wildlife, including the iconic pod of bottle nose dolphins could be disastrous.
Local communities are overwhelmingly opposed to the proposals, with 27 local community councils objecting. These groups would be at the forefront of any oil spills, and must be listened to.
Tourism is of paramount importance to the economy of the Highlands and Islands, providing jobs and supporting local businesses.
Allowing ship to ship transfers to take place in the Moray Firth would put this under threat.
Oil transfers have previously taken place in the safety of Nigg Harbour. If transfers have to take place, ensuring that happens at a port, in circumstances where the supporting infrastructure is in place, and not at sea, is vital.
I look forward to leading a debate on the subject in the Scottish Parliament in early May.
