Siemens hands out multi-million pound contracts for Moray East windfarm

Siemens has awarded multi-million pound contracts with a series of UK firms for the development of the Moray East windfarm.

The German firm is the lead contractor for the 950MW windfarm and has issued a number of subcontracts since work began in September.

Civil engineering firm BAM Nuttal has been awarded work as the main subcontractor for the onshore substation to connect power to the grid, which is being run out of its Glasgow office.

Perth-based engineers I&H Brown are also undertaking work on the substation while JGC Engineering  and Tecgnical Services of Thurso are fabricating and fitting high voltage containers for the project’s offshore substation platforms.

Barrier Architectural in Stockton-on-Tees and VolkerInfra, based in Preston, have also won work.

The values of the individual awards have not been disclosed.

Moray East is due to become operational in 2022 and will generate enough electricity to power around 950,000 UK homes.

Anwer Amara-Korba, project director at Moray East for Siemens Transmission and Distribution, said: “We are delighted to have appointed a number of our subcontractors to deliver Moray East. This is one of the largest construction projects in Scotland and it is vital that companies based in the local area get to share in its success.

“It will be a key part of providing clean, sustainable energy for Scotland to meet its low carbon aims, providing enough power for one million homes.”

Sarah Graham, transmission infrastructure package manager for Moray East said: “Moray East has been in development for the last nine years and we are now progressing with construction across various elements of the project.

“The experience and capability of the local supply chain is crucial in delivering the transmission infrastructure required to grid connect the wind farm. We welcome Siemens’ appointment of its key subcontractors and look forward to working with them to deliver the project safely and successfully.”
