Finnish firm Wärtsilä has signed a ten-year lease on a property within Aberdeen’s Energy Transition Zone (ETZ), representing a £2 million commitment.
The Helsinki-headquartered marine and energy solutions firm becomes the latest company to enter the ETZ, following Integrity ISS and D2Zero.
Established in 2021, the ETZ aims to accelerate the shift from traditional oil and gas to renewable and low carbon industries in the North East of Scotland.
Spanning 40 hectares of land close to Aberdeen’s £420m South Harbour, the ETZ is the focal point for the proposed North East Scotland Investment Zone.
ETZ Ltd, the not-for-profit company developing the ETZ, said the “landmark deal” with Wärtsilä came from a partnership with property developer Epic Alva 1.
ETZ Ltd allocated £250,000 through its property improvement fund to Epic Alva 1, who undertook a £1m refurbishment of Wärtsilä’s future location on Souter Head Road.
Wärtsilä subsequently entered a ten-year lease agreement for the 2,000 square metre property, worth over £2m.
The company employs 25 people in the Granite City, with plans to further increase its workshop staff.
Wärtsilä moves into Aberdeen’s ETZ
In a statement, Wärtsilä said the “strategic move” to expand its Aberdeen workshop will focus on delivering “high-quality maintenance, repair and overhaul services of engine components”.
Meanwhile, ETZ Ltd land and property director Neil Young said: “The property improvement fund grants delivered much needed support to industrial property in the Energy Transition Zone, bolstering business confidence while helping attract and expand our low carbon supply chain.
“Wärtsilä are globally recognised company providing innovative energy solutions for the future and I’m proud of ETZ Ltd’s role in ensuring they continue to have a presence in the Energy Transition Zone as part of our ongoing efforts to maintain this region’s reputation for energy excellence.”
