Footballers from Russian club Zenit Saint Petersburg have played a five-a-side match on an Arctic oil rig for a documentary.
Russian national team players Alexander Kokorin, Yuri Lodygin, Artem Dzyuba and Yuri Zhirkov, as well as Belgium’s Nicholas Lombaerts lined up alongside workers on the Prirazlomnaya rig for the match.
The match was played in two halves of 15 minutes.
The documentary will be shown on Russian television on the eve of the Confederations Cup on June 16.
The idea was inspired by the arrival of the first Soviet nuclear submarine, K-3, at the North Pole in 1962. On reaching the ice, the submariners played had a kickabout.
The video, which previews the documentary, does not have Russian subtitles.
At the end, striker Aleksandr Kerzhakov can be heard saying in Russian that the Arctic is “Russia’s territory”.
