Government accused of wasting opportunity for alternative future for North Sea

Pulling the plug without warning on a £1 billion competition for technology to cut climate emissions from power stations has damaged investment in the UK, MPs have warned. Scrapping the scheme to develop “carbon capture and storage” technology, which captures and stores permanently underground up to 90% of carbon dioxide from fossil fuel plants, will also make it more expensive for the UK to tackle climate change.

Scottish hydro-power wipeout predicted

Scotland’s hydro power faces an agonising march into near-oblivion by the end of the decade, an industry boss warned yesterday. Mark Mathieson, chief executive of Green Highland Renewables (GHR) said the UK Government had failed to take account of evidence and missed out on broader benefits of hydro energy in its review of feed-in tariffs.

Orkney’s wind turbine scheme gets underway

The first phase of Orkney’s new fully funded community wind turbine scheme is expected to go live later this month. Farmers and landowners at 20 properties are set to benefit from discounted electricity for at least two decades as a result. Hamsin Wind is aiming to install over 60 single onshore wind turbines at residential and commercial sites across Orkney by the end of 2015 and is actively seeking applications from interested parties.
