Torness nuclear plant to remain open until 2030

Torness nuclear power station will have its life extended by seven years, operator EDF Energy has announced. The facility, near Dunbar in East Lothian, had been due to close by 2023 but will now be operational until 2030. The power station started operating in 1988 and now employs 550 full-time staff plus around 180 contractors.

Atlantis Resources strikes a deal to acquire two projects

Atlantis Resources has struck a deal to acquire two projects from Scottish Power Renewables UK for its tidal development company. The deal for Tidal Power Scotland (TPSL) is estimated to be around £6.6million, or 3,859,703 shares, which equates to around 6% of the issued share capital. Atlantis said as part of the transaction, TPSL will acquire Scottish Power Renewables entire tidal portfolio, comprising the 10MW Sound of Islay site and the 100MW Ness of Dunscaby site.

Chinese investment in UK nuclear power ‘could pose security risk’

Experts have expressed concern about the prospect of Chinese investment in the UK nuclear power sector, with claims the move could threaten national security. A final investment decision on the new nuclear plant at Hinkley Point, Somerset, could be announced during Chinese president Xi Jinping’s state visit. Chancellor George Osborne has already announced a £2 billion Government guarantee to secure Chinese funding for the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station set to be built by French firm EDF, and indicated that the next step may be a Chinese-designed, Chinese-built nuclear plant at Bradwell in Essex.

Scottish Power to learn of Longannet employees job hopes next month

A taskforce set up after it was revealed the coal-fired Longannet power station was set to close has met for a second time in a bid to help those who face job losses. It is expected Scottish Power will know by the end of October how many Longannet employees wish to take redundancy, seek redployment within the company or find new employment. The Energy Minister Fergus Ewing said detailed work had been taking place by Scottish Power, local councils and the Scottish Government and Scottish Enterprise to help with an economic recovery plan.

Eco Wave secures venture funds for marine energy systems

Eco Wave Power, an Israeli maker of ocean energy systems, raised initial funding for a $150 million pipeline of planned projects to use waves to generate electricity. The technology maker secured $2 million from Pirveli Ventures, with a representative of Pirveli joining its board of directors, Eco Wave said Monday. It will use the funds to start to develop 111 megawatts of marine-energy projects planned in countries including the UK, China, Mexico and Chile, co- founder Inna Braverman said.
