A protest in support of shale gas extraction has been held in Blackpool by campaigners. The move has been made in an attempt to highlight industry in Lancashire, after the county council refused planning permission for test fracking at a site in the region.

Beauly to Denny power line fully operational for first time

Electricity is being transmitted along the full length of the controversial Beauly to Denny power line for the first time. Joint developers Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission (SHE Transmission) and SP Energy Networks said the 220km (136-mile) “power super-highway” is now fully operational at up to 400 kilovolts. The overhead line carries renewable energy generated in the Highlands to central Scotland and was given the go-ahead by Scottish Government ministers in January 2010.

Opito strengthens safety team in Gulf of Mexico

Opito has strengthened its team with the appointment of a new approvals manager to meet the rising demand of accredited offshore workers. The industry body, which now has 13 approved training centres in the Gulf of Mexico, has accredited an estimated 25,000 workers this year. Richard Edwards, a former firefighter and US Coastguard, has joined Opito’s international office in Houston.

Kunming Liu has joined the board with immediate effect, with the role forming part of the company's signed licence agreement with Yantai Jereh Oilfield Services. Brazilian prosecutors charge 12 people over alleged bribery scheme

Brazilian prosecutors said 12 people have been charged in connection with an alleged bribery scheme involving SBM Offshore and Petrobras. Police said they had executed four arrest warrants as part of an investigation known as "Operation Black Blood". It is understood two of the suspects are already in jail.

Sensor technology inspired by Bottlenose Dolphins could help extend the life of oil and gas pipelines by using ROV's (Remotely Operated Vehicles) to detect blockages, according to new research. The initiative, carried out by Heriot-Watt's University's Ocean Systems Laboratory, Hydrasun Solutions and CENSIS, will develop an enhanced wide-band sonar system based on the principles of the marine mammal's detection capabilities.

UN moves to block IS terror funds

Finance ministers from the United Nations Security Council’s 15 powers are poised to adopt a resolution aimed at disrupting the Islamic State (IS) terror group’s earnings from oil and antiquities sales, ransom payments and other criminal activities. IS is already subject to UN sanctions under resolutions dealing with al Qaida. But the proposed resolution, sponsored by the United States and Russia, elevates IS to the same level as al Qaida, reflecting its split from al Qaida and the growing threat it poses especially in the Middle East and North Africa. US treasury secretary Jacob Lew, who will chair today’s meeting, said disrupting IS’ revenue and cutting it off from the international financial system “are critical to effectively combating this violent terrorist group”.

Salmond and Trump lock war of words in windfarm battle

Former first minister Alex Salmond unleashed a scathing attack on “three-time loser” Donald Trump last night, accusing him of damaging the Scottish economy. The Gordon MP condemned his “treatment of Scotland”, which he said would prompt Scottish Americans to join the “ever-growing list of people alienated” by the businessman. The Trump Organisation was quick to retaliate, branding Mr Salmond a “has-been and totally irrelevant”.
