Survivor tells of 18 hour wait to be rescued from Azerbaijan platform fire

A survivor of a fire at the Guneshli field in Azerbaijan has told how workers were stranded on a lifeboat for 18 hours while they waited to be rescued. Malakhat Aliyeva told reporters strong winds had made it challenging for rescuers to approach the lifeboat, which had around 26 people on board. One person has been confirmed dead, while another 29 workers are missing, following the fire off the cost of Azerbaijan.

Fire at Daewoo shipbuilding yard leaves one dead and seven injured

Police are investigating after a fire at a shipbuilding yard in South Korea has left one person dead and seven others injured. The incident happened at a shipyard owned by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering on Geoje Island earlier today. It is believed the fire broke out on an 85,000 LPG tankers where engineers had been carrying out welding work.

Fatal platform fire caused by leak in gas fuel line

The cause of a platform fire in Mexico earlier this year which killed four workers and left 16 injured was a leak in a rarely used gas fuel line which had corroded, according to a new report. The findings by Mexico’s Agencia de Seguridad, Energia y Ambiente (ASEA) on what happened on board the Pemex Abkatun Permanente platform will not lead to any fines against the company. The gas fuel line had shown what was described as an “unusual” kind of accelerated corrosion due the presence of micro-organisms and sulphuric acid within the gas.

At least 11 killed in fire at Saudi oil company residence

A large fire in the basement of a residential complex in Saudi Arabia’s oil-rich east has killed at least 11 people and injured more than 200, officials said. The blaze began early on Sunday morning in a multi-story residential compound known as Radium in the eastern city of Khobar. The complex houses workers for state oil giant Saudi Aramco, which oversees petroleum production in the Opec powerhouse. The company said an investigation has begun into the cause of the fire, which sent thick black smoke billowing from the building.

US pipeline shut-in after fire

A natural gas liquids pipeline has been shut after it went on fire in Colorado. Williams Companies said the incident occurred after the six-inch wide pipeline was struck by a third-party conduction excavation. No one was injured following the fire which was being monitored by the fire department.

Wreckage of sunken oil rig support boat found

The wreckage of a sunken oil rig support boat was found during a bid map the dozens of sunken ships sunk in the Battle of Jutland. The ship was believed to have to have sunk following a fire in the 1980s. The scans of ships destroyed in the Battle of Jutland 99 years ago have been made for the first time using 21st Century technology.

Workers evacuated from offshore vessel off North Sea coast

More than 80 crew members have been evacuated from an offshore vessel after a fire on board. Fire crews were called to the scene in Peterhead Harbour at around 3am and had the blaze under control within two hours. At the height of the incident 36 firefighters were involved in tackling the inferno on the Fugro Symphony, an offshore supply vessel.

Search continues for missing Pemex workers after platform fire

A search for three missing workers following a fire on a Pemex oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico is still underway. The incident, which happened last Wednesday, killed four people and left dozens of other workers injured. The state-owned company said repairs have begun to resume production at the facility while the search for the missing workers continues. Pemex said it expects it will meet its output target of 646,000 barrels per day (bpd) for the region despite it being shut down on the platform following the fire.

Three workers missing after Pemex oil rig fire

Three workers are missing following the huge blaze on an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico that killed four workers and burned for hours. Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, said it became aware of the missing workers when it recounted personnel after Wednesday’s fire on the Abkatun-A Permanente shallow-water platform in the Campeche Sound. One of the missing workers was from Pemex and the other two were employed by contractor Cotemar, the company said.

Fires put out at three oil tanks at Libya’s Es Sider Port

Libya extinguished fires at three of five oil-storage tanks that started last week at its largest oil port, helping global crude prices to stabilize. Libya is still seeking international assistance because of possible environmental damage, said Ali al-Hasy, a spokesman for the Petroleum Facilities Guard, part of the internationally-recognized government of Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thinni. Es Sider has tanks with a capacity of 6.2 million barrels of oil, compared with current Libyan output of 352,000 barrels, according to National Oil Corp.
