Arab Spring-style protests have rocked Europe’s third-biggest natural gas supplier. Thousands of young Algerians have taken to the streets, fed up with an octogenarian president who’s been in power for 20 years and a weak economy that doesn’t generate enough jobs. While the rare public display of dissatisfaction has sparked a political crisis in the authoritarian state, the country’s energy exports haven’t been disrupted.

Court ruling stings Saipem for $135m


Italian oil service company Saipem said today that it had been ordered to pay Algerian firm Sonatrach $135million in compensation in connection with a construction project.

Petrofac signs two agreements with Sonatrach


Petrofac has signed two strategic contract agreements with Algerian state-owned Sonatrach. The first is a five year contract providing a range of multi-discipline engineering design and procurement services in support of the company’s upstream hydrocarbon development programme. The company said the contract will cover the early definition of new projects, detailed engineering and services in support of project execution.
